March PTSA Updates

March 22, 2010

Below is an update for the week of March 22, 2010.

* Late Start Days - March 26.   School starts 9:25 am.

CALL FOR CHAPERONES!

The 6th grade new members of the National Junior Honor Society are planning a field trip to Woodland Park Zoo on April 2nd.  In order to attend, we need to have 4 parent chaperones.  Because this is a school trip, parents will have to fill out the paperwork for the Washington State Patrol.  It takes several days to get a response from them, so if people are interested, they should contact the main office to get the paperwork as soon as possible.  This is going to be a great trip!!  But it cannot happen without parent involvement!

Questions?  Contact Rebecca Ritchie at Rebecca.Ritchie@rentonschools.us.

It is that time of year again!  We are looking for individuals who may be interested in serving on the 2010-2011 Nelsen PTSA Executive Committee.

The position open are President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary.

This year’s Nominating Committee contacts are: Karen Carpenter at 2bacarpenter@comcast.net, and Eileen Richards at etrichards@comcast.net.   We are looking forward to hearing from you regarding potential nominees.

Nominations are needed no later than April 30th.  This will enable the committee time to interview and evaluate potential candidates.

Thank you for your assistance and all you do for the students.

Karen Carpenter

PENNIES FOR HAITI
How many pennies lined up end-to-end would it take to circle the hallways of Nelsen?  The answer will be in how much money we donate to the Haiti disaster relief.  In March, Nelsen students will be conducting a fundraiser to assist in rebuilding schools in Haiti and benefit students displaced by the earthquake. All donations will specifically be used to help rebuild schools and assist in the education of school children in Haiti. Start saving your pennies and spare coins now.  Further information to follow.

 WASHINGTON D.C./ NEW YORK TRIP
If you are planning on sending your student to DC and New York City in June and have not signed up yet, please make a deposit on-line at www.worldstrides.org or have your student pick up a packet from Ms. Rademacher in Room 203.  It is important to get your name on the list to reserve tickets to the museums, plays, hotels, etc.  Thank you! A parent meeting will be held in late May with complete information.  Questions?  Contact Ms. Rademacher at Diane.Rademacher@rentonschools.us

SCHOOL DISTRICT NEWS

The Renton School District will no longer send hard copy notices home with students of sex offenders being released in the area.

Using the King County’s Sherriff’s Office’s new dissemination process, the district will alert parents using school newsletters to visit the county’s Web site when a  sex offender moves into, or is released into the area. The web site is: www.kingcounty.gov/safety/sheriff/SOSearch.aspx.
The Sherriff’s Office interactive Web site allows citizens more information about the sex offender and their whereabouts in the neighborhood, and allows for real-time map searches. The system also allows parents to share only specific aspects of the sex offender with their student, eliminating having students read that information on the printed document.
For more information, contact the district Community Relations Office at 425.204.2345, or community.relations@rentonschools.us.

Nelsen Middle School students were recently inducted into the school‟s National Honor Society at a special ceremony, with keynote speaker Bob Bridge. To be eligible for the honor, students had to maintain a 3.5 grade point average and receive a 3.5 citizenship mark on their second-quarter report card. Nelsen‟s Honor Society now numbers 243 students.

Bing’s Earth Day Photo Contest for Students

On Friday at NCCE Seattle we announced that our next homepage photo contest will kick off on March 29 and this time there’s a twist. We’re asking students in the United States to submit photos to help celebrate the 40th anniversary of Earth Day and the winning photo will be displayed on the Bing homepage on April 22, Earth Day itself!

In addition to the grand prize winner seeing their photo on Bing.com, we’ve pulled together some great prizes for both students and their schools. Winners across the four age groups (ages 5-10, 11-13, 14-17 and 18+) will win a trip for two to the Microsoft Campus to take part in a Bing editorial team meeting where we pick images for future homepages. Additionally, each winner will receive equipment from HP and Canon to help build digital photo resources at their school. Prizes for individual winners and their schools across the four age groups will total over $70,000.

· 1st place prizes: Individuals receive an HP Pavilion desktop and monitor and a “Digital Photo Lab” for their school.

· 2nd place prizes: Individuals receive an HP Pavilion desktop and monitor and a “Digital Photo Kit” for their school.

· 3rd place prizes: Individuals receive an HP Pavilion desktop and monitor and a “Digital Photo Starter Set” for their school.

And here’s the “everyone wins” part. There’s a great opportunity to help other classrooms in need during the voting stage from April 13th to the 19th.  Bing will give a $5.00 GivingCard for DonorsChoose.org to the first 20,000 people who vote each day. Voters can then decide what classroom projects (like math, science, art, reading) will benefit from Bing’s donation. If you do the math, we’re talking up to $100,000 a day to help schools across the country. Each day you can return to the site to cast another vote and have an opportunity to pick up another GivingCard.

Bing helps students explore the world with our rich homepage imagery every day, so we’re excited to see what the country’s students think we might all want to discover.

To find out more about the contest, including the submission and voting process and prizes for the finalists, visit http://earthdayphotocontest.com/. Teachers will be able to order free posters for their classrooms in the coming days, as well as take advantage of other contest resources on the site.
